History Of Anrich
The Veterinary Practice was established in 1967 by Enid Moody in Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield and was moved to its better remembered site in Wigan Road, Hindley in 1971. It was bought by its current Principal, Richard Weston with his wife Angela on 8th October 1981 and was renamed “Anrich”.
During the following years the Practice was modernised and extensively rebuilt. During the modernisation phase branches were set up.
Back to Bolton Road, Ashton in 1982, Ormskirk Road, Pemberton in 1983 and High Street, Standish in 1984. Each of the branches was kitted out for consulting only, with one consulting room and waiting room. All surgery was done at Hindley. Hindley’s facilities were expanded to include:
Waiting room
One consulting room
Laboratory, admit/discharge room
X ray room
Dispensary
Two operating theatres
One prep table
Isolation ward
26 surgical kennels
In 1988 Anrich was a large 4 Vet practice. However, Vets were becoming harder to employ especially in the north and it was felt that quality of care had declined slightly with the increase in size. It was in October 1988 that Ashton and Standish branch surgeries were closed. The Hindley surgery was upgraded further to pass the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Hospital Board inspectorate. The awarding of HOSPITAL STATUS guarantees the client that very high standards are set and inspected by our governing body, unlike other practices. The inspections are carried out every four years but we can also be subjected to spot checks.
From 1988 to 1995 the Hospital maintained its commitment to quality care as a two Vet Hospital practice. There was continued investment in equipment and skills with the stability of having no changes of Vet during 1990 to 2000. During the 1990’s the Americans changed the face of Veterinary practise by incorporating practices into Pet Superstores. In 1995 it was apparent this was about to follow suit in Britain. Anrich took the unprecedented step of moving the Hospital and opening its own Pet Superstore, Peoples Pets. This was the first Vet owned superstore in Britain. The new purpose built Veterinary Hospital in Caroline Street has been a great success. So much so it rapidly outgrew the building it was in.
The lessons learned from the venture allowed the shop to re-size to 2000 sq ft in January 1998 under the new name of Pets by Vets. This reflects the major difference this shop has to offer. That is, professional advice from professionally trained Veterinary staff. Something no other pet shop in the world offers. Also the shop has been reduced in size to reduce the overheads. This left 4000sq feet of empty space in the larger building.
The decision was made to move the Hospital over to the larger building and incorporate it with the shop. The building work took place from August 1998 until the Hospital started consultations on 26th April 1999. This was the first phase of the final development.
