Veterinary MRI Scanning
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is our preferred imaging technique to see internal structures. Other imaging techniques cannot see certain areas in such depth or detail. When we assess an animal, we will always choose the best imaging technique for the situation. MRI is not only the most detailed of the imaging techniques, but unlike traditional radiographic procedures; x-rays, it does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation, making it less invasive to the patient. Instead, MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to form an image of the body region that is being scanned.
MRI Scanning Procedure
Here at Anrich Vets, we have a purpose-built dedicated MRI suite with an imaging team of four professionals, who are on hand to answer any imaging-related enquiries. Your pet will need to be anaesthetised for the scan, as they need to be completely still during the procedure for the scan to show a clear and detailed result. Your pet will be continuously monitored by our dedicated team of imaging nurses. Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans are completed in a short space of time; typically, between 1–3 hours, giving us real-time diagnostic results, for an instant and initial understanding of the problem.
However, we can send your pet’s scan for a full diagnostic workup, with express reports in as little as 4 hours. You will know the results of the MRI quickly, and we can then create a suitable treatment plan.
Indications for Vet MRI Referral
A vet will make their initial consultation based on the presenting conditions and the owner’s report. Using an MRI will give the vet an opportunity to confirm their suspected diagnosis. The detail given by the MRI scanning allows the vet to form a very precise treatment plan based on the exact damage or location of the problem.

An MRI gives an incredibly detailed image of the inside of an animal. It gives more clarity than other forms of imaging, and this greater level of detail can lead to a more precise diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. MRI systems can be used during treatment to assess the changes, and then alterations can be made to the treatment plan. It is a painless and non-invasive method of seeing inside the animal, preventing the need for invasive diagnostic techniques.
Cost of MRI for Small Animals
The average cost of a vet MRI scan in the UK is around £2,500. Our scans are priced more competitively, so that they are more accessible to clients. Generally, your pet insurance will cover the cost of an MRI scan, but always check with your insurance company to make sure.
